Everybody can make video.

By Tim on Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Jakob Lodwick, who’s been a good friend to us, for instance, introducing us to Justin Johnson, made a great video for a company retreat explaining what they’re trying to do with Vimeo (embedded below). I’ve had a number of friends voice concern about the state of personal videoblogging lately; that the move towards shows and networks on the internet might be overtaking the impulse to communicate that got people started. I go to sites like Vimeo pretty often to see that the conversation’s alive and well.

Ward Sutton has guts.

ward 2

Ward Sutton is a young political cartoonist (and an animator featured in Channel Frederator’s Episode #7) who’s forged his own unique voice in a medium that is often undistinquished in its me-too-ness. He’s a passionate, skillful stylist with the guts to stand up when others sit on their hands.

Follow his weekly cartoons in the Village Voice (click on the strip above to see one of the latest full size), buy his book, or buy stuff from his great poster archive.

Fred hits it out of the park.

bio_fred1.jpgFred Wilson’s another of the venture capitalists I admire for walking the walk in new media with a thoughtful, dependable blog reflecting his work, his life, and his interests. He reminded me of a post Herb made a while back with his sketch on the modern Google:

“Big companies are not the best places to innovate and guess what, Google is a big company now.”

Congratulations YouTube…

Calling all Friends of AiB

By Tim on Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Friends of Alive in Baghdad, a group of high-powered fans of the award-winning videoblog which features reports from citizens in Iraq, has produced a number of great short video pieces to raise awareness of AiB’s need for equipment donations to support the very cool and important work they’re doing. The great compilation piece above has a little bit of all of the 13 videos, which feature super talented online video people like Kent Nichols of Ask a Ninja, the guys from Invisible Engine, and Micki Krimmel . The amazing Sarah Szalavitz worked tirelessly the past few weeks to get the videos out all over the web. Look for them running on many of our networks today when their new episodes go live, including Pulp Secret, VOD Cars, and Fast Lane Daily, with more to come.

We’re big supporters of the work AiB is doing, and happy to help spread the word. If you’ve got equipment or funds you’d like to donate, or want to help in any other way, please do so using the contact info on their website.

latest net neutrality video

By Tim on Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Wondering what all the fuss over Net Neutrality is about, and whether you should get involved? The good people over at SavetheInternet.com have put together a new video that pretty clearly explains their take on the issues and stakes involved.

The first attempt by big corporations to charge tolls for a fast lane on the Internet was roundly defeated due to popular outcry, but now the coalition of organizations and citizens behind Save the Internet are looking to make net neutrality a law. Please visit their website if you’d like to sign the petition and spread the word.
