Michelle’s Video Rundown: Superheroes and Campy Throwbacks

By Michelle DeForest on Monday, June 2nd, 2008

There are a few things that most of us at the company have in common: We like to have fun, we wish we were rock stars (well, we’re already rock stars, but I mean actual rock stars), we love movies, and we are superhero fanatics!
To my delight, I was able to catch the Superhero Fashion & Fantasy exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art this weekend (which I highly suggest), and it reminded me of a fantastic series that I saw a trailer for a few months ago.

Italian Spiderman Trailer

Italian Superman was something of a mystery to me after I watched the trailer. I thought it was a brilliant, campy one-off, and nothing more. To my surprise, I saw an episode featured on Yahoo! Video last week, and was psyched to find the first two episodes up on YouTube, MySpace, and Yahoo!. The story that accompanies it is just as outlandish as the series, explaining that Italian Spiderman was adapted from the novel, Death Wears A Hat, and filmed in 1964 by Italian filmmaker Gianfranco Gatti, and produced by Alrugo Entertainment.

Meet Patty DeArteaga

I’ve known Patty for a while now, yet I seem to be one of the few people in the office who was unaware of her musical ability. I finally caught on when I previewed this week’s Meth Minute in which her voice is showcased in Ultra and the Lazer Hearts. Seen here.

When she’s not singing, snowboarding or playing dodgeball, yes dodgeball, she can be found managing the whereabouts of CEO Herb Scannell, COO Jed Simmons, and our Senior VP of Media Sales, George Stewart. Patty’s used to multi-tasking though, she spent fours years at Sony where she worked with acts such as Britney and Beyonce (though she’s quick to point out, Britney was in her prime then). Periodically she still gets huge envelopes with Sony swag and makes us all jealous.

Skrakk! Skakleeesh! Shooom

By Tim on Thursday, September 20th, 2007

It’s long past the point where the combined output of our networks is so much, I don’t know when we’ve done something cool, or who did it, ’til days or weeks go by.

FLD in Times Square

See for instance yesterday’s Fast Lane Daily, shot in the back of a moving Bentley, or Girls Gone Styled’s green fashion episode. So I’m not sure who from the Pulp Secret team posted this cool little video spot about comic book action words, but it’s fun, and a nice surprise this morning. Check it out.

Lan at Comic Con

By Tim on Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Just had to post this because it’s so darn cool. Our friend Lan Bui of Noodlescar greatness made this killer video of photographs he took during this weekend’s Comic Con. Keep an eye out for NNN peeps like Zadi from JETSET and Casey and Justin from Pulp Secret, and frequent JETSET correspondent (and Noodlescar host) Bonny, Lan’s muse and partner in crime.

p.s. Happy belated birthday, Lan! (You can see Bonny with cupcakes in the early photos.)

Live at Comic-Con!

By Tim on Friday, July 27th, 2007

Well, as live as we get… we’re not Justin.tv (though putting a camera on Casey for a day would have been a fun idea), but we are posting updates from San Diego Comic-Con ‘07 every day on Pulp Secret, the first network devoted to comics.

Our full team coverage of the biggest comics and pop culture event of the year includes daily reports from Pete, Justin and Alex from THE STACK, and they’ll also be doing a special Pulp Secret Team-Up episode guest-starring Casey from A COMICBOOK ORANGE. Steve and Zadi from JETSET are there shooting a report for next week, and from Next New Networks HQ, Ian is out shooting, editing, and posting the reports like a true super-hero, and Erin is also along helping field marshal the troops on the ground. We’re also giving away a fully-loaded video iPod (with a complete collection of Pulp Secret videos) to one lucky Comic-Con attendee — if you’re at the show, ask them for a postcard for a chance to enter.

The team’s first report is in — stay tuned to Pulp Secret for more.

A Comicbook Orange is Here!

By Tim on Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

We’re excited about this new show, now live on Pulp Secret, which I blogged about yesterday. Feedback so far is great, and Rudy and Casey have been really building some great word of mouth — you can join an official Facebook group, find A Comicbook Orange on MySpace, and a number of other places.

Check it out below, and if you’re looking for more good comics to read, let us know what you’d like to see more of on A Comicbook Orange.

On a side note, this is also the first time we’ve put out an episode in a widescreen ratio — if you try to view the show fullscreen on the site, or download the iTunes-compatible file, you’ll see what we mean. It’s the little things that sometimes get us pumped.

A Comicbook Orange Cometh

A Comicbook Orange

We’re very happy to announce that beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, June 6, we’ll be adding A Comicbook Orange, a spinoff show from Casey McKinnon and Rudy Jahchan, the creators of Galacticast, to Pulp Secret, our network for comic book fandom and culture. Here’s a little preview:

Casey McKinnon of A Comicbook OrangeCasey took the gutsy move not too long ago of quitting her day job and focusing full-time on building up the production company, and both of them put untold hours every week into making Galacticast continually great, and we couldn’t be happier to be their partners on their first project since taking the big leap. We hope you’ll all check out the first episode tomorrow, and let us know what you want to see on A Comicbook Orange.

For fun, here’s one more teaser.

Ward Sutton has guts.

By Fred on Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

ward 2

Ward Sutton is a young political cartoonist (and an animator featured in Channel Frederator’s Episode #7) who’s forged his own unique voice in a medium that is often undistinquished in its me-too-ness. He’s a passionate, skillful stylist with the guts to stand up when others sit on their hands.

Follow his weekly cartoons in the Village Voice (click on the strip above to see one of the latest full size), buy his book, or buy stuff from his great poster archive.

PulpSecret Go!

By Tim on Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

And with that, we launch our fifth network, PulpSecret. We couldn’t be happier with ringleader David P. Levin and our hosts (who also host the awesome Comic Book Club) — they’ve kicked off an awesome first show for the network in the PulpSecret Report. I got chills seeing David walk down that long hallway and start pulling out comic books. Can he really be so crazy as to give them away? And like the guys said, how do I get in on that?

I’ve never made a secret of my admiration for Jeff Jarvis. Most media thinkers who don’t have a hard on for big media but love small media read him often. I particlarly liked this post called If I were the Oscars (or Viacom).

(BTW, the quote in the post title is Dave Winer via Jarvis.)
