The Mickipedia Show
By Tim.Really enjoyed the latest episode of the Mickipedia show, where Micki (of the many great places Revver, Participant, and Worldchanging) takes part in a drunken Santa crawl in LA and interviews her friend Jeff Wishnie, CTO of Inveneo, a non-profit that connects people to information and technology in the developing world. I liked this for a lot of reasons: Jeff’s work is worthy and interesting to hear about, and it’s charming and funny to hear him talking about it while on a subway with santas yelling “ho ho ho” (a bit menacingly) in the background. I also liked how Micki kept herself in the frame, because you get to see how much she and Jeff like one another, which adds a lot. Micki is someone who naturally connects with people, in a way some of the more introverted of us might envy a little, and it really comes through in this episode.
Also liked touches like her handheld camerawork at the end, which nicely captures the winding down of a night out with friends. It’s still amazing to me what you can make with a consumer camera now, and one of the fun parts of my job these days is when people I know from the TV world make that revelation, too. One of our producers at Next New, recently liberated from a cable TV job, came back elated the other day after shooting a show idea he had in Union Square with nothing but a DV camera. He couldn’t believe how well it turned out, and how much fun he’d had. It’s something the vloggers have known for a while now, but there are still lots of people to turn on to this. Watching Mickipedia’s a good way to start.
